We dedicate our spring 2002 edition of Danfoss Solutionsto teamwork and partnering. Weve chosen the theme not only because these are core values at Danfoss, but also because they are important to our customers, suppliers, and just about everyone else we do business with. The articles focus on notable achievements made by teams, such as increased efciency, energy savings and improved productivity. Implicit in these relationships is trust. Its important that everyone involved works toward the same goals. This is why teams arent built overnight. Developing trust and merging resources well takes time, but the results are lasting. Although it has become a buzzword in the past decade, teamwork has been critical for Danfoss since it was founded almost seven decades ago. Whether acquiring new companies, collaborating with customers on new products or applications, working across borders, or synthesizing internal efforts, Danfoss has long relied on teamwork and partnerships to achieve its goals. Strong teams are critical not only when things are good, but also when challenges arise. As mentioned in the article Spur Growth by Optimism and Teamwork, its far more productive to face the future as part of a team than to go it alone. We hope you enjoy reading this issue and look forward to hearing your feedback. Teamwork and Partnership Its far more productive to face the future as part of a team than to go it alone. Presidential Study Group on Health and Safety Under Extraordinary Incidents to educate people about building security and ventilation. The group is chaired by James E. Woods, chairman of ASHRAEs Environmental Health Committee. In January, it issued a report called Risk Management for Health and Safety Under Extraordinary Incidents. Building owners and occupants may now be willing to redirect resources to enhance building performance to further reduce occu pant risk associated with extraordinary inci dents, while continuing to provide acceptable indoor environments, with energy efciency and cost effectiveness during normal conditions, said Woods. The issue of safety is also at the forefront at places like post ofces, water plants, and grocery stores. Supermarkets and food and beverage suppliers have been working to combat public fears that food will be tainted on the shelves. Food industry executives, who already were focusing on food safety, are tightening safeguards against tampering. The Presidents Defense Appropriations Act, signed in January, included 367 million for the U. S. Department of Agriculture to bolster biose curity efforts, including strengthening programs for food safety, pest and animal disease protec tions, and research. As security fears mellow, businesses are seizing opportunities to ramp up business in a postboom era. After a prosperous year 2000, the HVAC sector was experiencing a slowdown when the terrorist attacks hit. Last years total shipments of airconditioners and heat pumps were down six percent, according to ARI. But there are positive developments already. November and December showed an increase in total shipments, says Edward Dooley, vice president of communication and education for ARI. Its about what we expected given the state of the economy. What we didnt expect, of course, was 911. Shipments showed a decline in October in the direct aftermath of the disaster, and people were reacting to what was happening. Although commercial construc tion has been slow, housing starts remain strong, and so do sales of products for housing, such as heat pumps and temperature controls. ARI does nt expect to see a major change in shipments in 2002 over last year, but anticipates growth next year. Focus On Energy Factors that might boost business include economic stimulus initiatives, improved residential and commercial construction, market globalization, and new Department of Energy standards. Supplier partnerships with builders, wholesalers, contractors and installers will also spur longterm growth. In HVAC, for instance, energy manage ment continues to be a key issue, and Danfoss is partnering with contractors to meet new stan dards and efciency demands see Drive Star on page 8. The Annual Energy Outlook 2002 from the DOE anticipates demand for energy services will increase signicantly, which means a higher demand for solutions that increase energy efciency and reduce consumption. In the manufacturing sector, shipments dipped after the terrorist attacks and showed improve ment at the end of the year. Shipments for 2001, already well below 2000 shipments, fell in November, but new orders rose the following month, which ARI says was a good sign. The industry is now working to get back on track with growth. As manufacturers streamline operations, supplier partners continue to help them improve the supply chain and prepare for stabilized growth. As the recovery takes hold, Danfoss continues to partner with its customers in the key business segments of refrigeration and airconditioning, motion control, and heating and water, in order to build strength over the long haul. If the events of the past year have proved anything, its that in difcult times working together is the best way to achieve lasting success. Although commercial construction has been slow, housing starts remain strong, and so do sales of products for housing, such as heat pumps a
<a10:updated>2007-07-09T17:11:50+02:00</a10:updated>

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Page 4

Spring 2002 5 Danfoss Dependable. 4Spring 2002 Danfoss Dependable. Hennepin County Government Cuts Energy Costs MOTION CONTROLS TODAY, ENERGY CONSUMPTION IS A SERIOUS BUSINESS, whether it is a large institutional building or a commercial facility. Energy efciency, ease of maintenance, and environmental comfort all play roles in effective energy usage. Minnesotas Hennepin County Government considered these factors when designing and retrotting county administrative ofces and departments housed in eight separate buildings located throughout the Minneapolis area. With facilities this extensive, and with so many buildings involved in the county government, it is necessary to keep a watchful eye on energy expenditures while maintaining an acceptable comfort level for the buildings occupants. This challenge is the responsibility of Roy Earl, physical plant director for the Hennepin County Property. Earl is in charge of the operation and maintenance of the buildings that make up Hennepins County Government. Today, there is a general trend to update existing buildings to be more energy efcient through various technology upgrades. Therefore, our upgrade program started primarily as a utility cost avoidance measure, says Earl. This included the application of adjustable frequency drives AFDs, the retrotting of light xtures, the use of electronic ballasts, along with installation of other energy reduction projects. The original HVAC system was a constant volume system and at the time that the buildings were being constructed, high energy costs were not a consideration. Each of the eight buildings has its own heating and cooling systems, and each facility uses its own building automation system. In addition to installing the AFDs as an energy conservation measure, the drives were also installed to provide a system that was easy to maintain, with greater reliability and control. Fiftyve Danfoss Graham VLT Series Drives were employed to achieve this goal in the eight Hennepin County facilities. We use ftythree of the drives to control the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems fan speed in seven of the eight county buildings, states Earl. The eighth building, which is the Hennepin County Home School, is a detention center for juvenile offenders and a yearround school. This facility uses two Danfoss Graham VLT units to pump water throughout the schools campus. Other facilities that now incorporate drives include the Hennepin County Government Center, the Hennepin County Medical Center, Brookdale Regional Center, the Main Welfare Center, Dale Regional Center, Juvenile Justice Administration Facility and the Environmental Services Building. These ftythree Danfoss Graham units are used mainly on the supply side of our HVAC units. However, there are instances in some of our larger HVAC applications where we have also incor porated drives on the return fans, says Earl. Also, as part of the energy con servation mandate, we have, in certain applications used Danfoss Graham drives on variable ow pumping and chillwater systems. Drives aid utility rebate program It was advantageous for us to begin the energy reduction program because of the rebates offered by our utility, Northern States Power, Earl explains. The rebate was seventy dollars per horsepower prior to their deadline date, and it was reduced to forty dollars after that date. In order to take advan tage of the higher rebate rate, we placed a rm delivery deadline on the AFDs 15 days prior to the rebate reduction date. In order to do this, they contracted for the drives and took possession of the AFDs prior to going out for bids and selecting an electrical contractor to do the installation. As one of the bid requirements we asked that a completion bond of 85, 000 be provided, Earl says. This was required in the event the vendor missed our December rst cutoff date for delivery to us so that we would have the time to supply the necessary paperwork to qualify for the maximum rebate. In designing and building motor control panels, understanding the application is paramount. It is every bit as important as knowledge of the control components and assemblies that make up the panel. OEMs understand the functionality and purpose of the products they manufacture. But when it comes upon them to source the electrical control panel, they relate to the panel in terms of its output and what it should make their machine do. Consequently, it falls upon the control panel manufacturer to understand the OEMs machinery as deeply as the control panel itself. The Motor Control team at Danfoss Inc. in Canada has put together a group of people with over 200 years of combined experience in the motor control industry. This is a team comprising customer service, product management, design and application engineering, production and assembly that responds to customers and walks them through every stage of the process, from understanding applica tion, selecting the right components, designing controls, assembly, wiring and testing, to the humanmachine interface. Rather than try and use a general control design to adapt to the OEMs application, Danfoss creates designs that are applicationspecic without compromise or modication on the part of the OEM. With a wellequipped panel shop that is both CSA certied and UL listed the endproduct is of highest quality. The spectrum of components that can be used to build control panels includes contactors, overload relays, disconnect switches, control and sig nalling devices, transformers, termi nal blocks, enclosures and other auxiliary control devices. The process of interaction with the customer usually begins at the cus tomer service desk where dedicated Motor Control experts walk the customer through the initial require ments which is a onestop solution. Responsiveness is a major strength at Danfoss and the teamwork is essential. If customer service requires assistance from engineering to pro duction or product management, that consultation usually occurs simulta neously since all the various members are in the same location, providing customers with options and answers. Each team member takes total responsibility for his or her role. There is no passing of the buck to another department and the endless wait that can easily be precipitated if one link in that information chain is slack From the simple motor starter, comprising a contactor and an overload in a Type I, Type 12, or Type 4 enclosure, to more complex panels requiring control sequencing and interlocks, to designheavy custom control assemblies, the team at Danfoss in Canada handles the entire range with careful attention throughout the thousands of control panels processed, tested, and shipped every year. The North American market realizes that there are a signicant number of Motor Control manufacturers in this market. Danfoss understands the absolute necessity to speak with OEMs using their own language, whether it be the language of truck restraints and power packs or safety edges and passdoors or intrinsically safe barriers and softstarting. Constantly striving to understand every cus tomers application and presenting solutions in a speedy and timely manner has given a small Motor Control player like Danfoss in North America a name that is the envy of bigger manufacturers. Building Motor Control Panels in the Language of the OEM rooms. One of the mechanical rooms is located four levels below the street, and the other is located in a 25th oor pent house. The fans below the street level force air up through the 13th oor, and the installation in the penthouse mechanical room forces air down from the 25th oor, on down through the 14th oor. The atrium is 24 stories of open space, which includes a skywalk. In Minneapolisthere are a number of buildings that are part of a skywalk system, and our Government Building is part of the system, says Earl. The skywalk matches u
<a10:updated>2007-07-09T17:11:50+02:00</a10:updated>

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Page 6

As in the case with the Hennepin County Government see story on page 4, AFDs achieve payback within a reasonable amount of time and also help to improve comfort throughout commercial buildings. Energy conservation is not only a costcutting initiative, its also an important part of environmental management. Commercial energy demand is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 1. 7 percent, reaching 23. 2 quadrillion Btu in 2020, according to the Annual Energy Outlook 2002 issued by the Department of Energy. Conserving energy in commercial buildings is one smart way to save money while respecting the environment. Spring 2002 9 Danfoss Dependable. 8Spring 2002 Danfoss Dependable. MOTION CONTROLS Educates service contractors and building owners about energy conservation while providing incentives for installing energysaving VFDs. efcient HVAC systems. But, the median age of commercial buildings is 30. 5 years, and most of them were not built with energy conservation in mind. At the same time, many new buildings are going up without con sideration of longterm energy savings. A solution is to retrot ventilation fan systems, pumps, waterchillers and lighting with variable frequency drives. The drives control motor speed, which allows for efcient energy consumption as well as improved reliability and lowered maintenance. Danfoss Grahams Drive Star program is designed to educate service con tractors and building owners about energy conservation while providing incentives for installing energysaving adjustable frequency drives AFDs. In the United States there are about 4. 5 million commercial buildings ofces, shopping malls, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, government build ings, churches, hospitals, and others. The buildings where we work, eat, shop, and conduct daily business consume about 764 billion kilowatts per year. And that doesnt include industrial operations. Decreasing that number seems daunting, but it is possible to make a difference in energy consumption building by building. In the meantime, the same measures can help building owners cut down on utility costs. Yearly energy expenditures for com mercial buildings total nearly 70 million dollars. One way to cut down on those energy costs is by installing very hour of every day, the buildings that make up our cities and towns consume an enormous amount of energy. The drives control motor speed, allowing for efcient energy consumption as well as improved reliability and lowered maintenance. E DDrriivvee SSttaarr Helping Buildings Get Smarter The program involves partnerships between Danfosss HVAC specialists and building owners and service contractors. Drives are the bestkept secret to achieving energy efciency thats out there today, says Bill Mudge, vice president of sales and marketing for Danfoss Graham. The AFD technol ogy is not new, but HVAC drives have PROGRAM Commercial energy demand is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 1. 7 percent, reaching 23. 2 quadrillion Btu in 2020. become highly efcient and reliable and more affordable. So, the return on investment is high. Whatever type of drives they use, building managers should consider just how much drives cut down on utility costs. The crux of the Drive Star program is a guarantee of energy savings and incentives for AFD installation. It also includes a free analysis consultation and energysaving calculation. Well come in and do the analysis. If we determine that we cant achieve substantial savings, then well be on our way. But in most cases, we determine that we can achieve those savings and we develop a solution for the customer, Mudge says. FOODBORNE ILLNESSESaccount for at least 325, 000 hospitalizations and 5, 000 deaths each year in the United States. The cost of these illnesses is estimated to be more than 10 billion annually. To combat foodborne illnesses, the FDA, an agency of the U. S. Public Health Service, issued its Food Code Recommendations. State and municipal health departments, charged by law with regulating the practices of food stores, restau rants, and all kinds of food handling and food storage facilities, draw on the Food Code for their own regulations. One of the key features of the latest food code is a recommendation that each food establishment have an effective Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point HACCP plan tailored to its own operations. The HACCP plan identies hazards that might contribute to foodborne illnesses, and establishes the critical points in the food handling process where controls can ensure the safety of food. Refrigerated storage is one of those critical points. Refrigerated environments that are used in preparation and storage of food products are required to maintain food at or below 41F. An exception permits a maximum of 45F in existing equipment that cannot reach 41F if the equipment is scheduled for an upgrade to meet the 41F requirement within ve years from the date the code takes effect. Datemarked food products must be sold within seven days of their preparation if held at 41F or less, and within four days if stored at 45F. The 45F storage temperature is not allowed in all instances. In order to help ensure food quality and to comply with the FDAs Food Code requirements, Danfoss and Hill PHOENIX, a Conyers, Georgiabased case manu facturer, collaborated to develop the Degree Master. The Degree Master is a smart load management system that provides supermarkets with food safety protection, improved product quality with less shrinkage, easy installation, improved case management, and reduced operating and maintenance costs. The system is made up of a load center and an oncase digital display. The load center is designed for singlepoint power distribution and the digital display unit can be AIRCONDITIONING REFRIGERATION programmed to show product tem peratures and case status as well as other operating parameters. With the Degree Master installed in cases at the Hill PHOENIX factories, all that remains to be done in the eld is cabling to power and connection to a host controller if desired. Instead of simply showing discharge air temperatures, the Degree Master provides information about overall case conditions. It monitors tempera ture at multiple points in the case shows the warmest spot in the case and allows store personnel to check refrigeration, defrost status, case cleaning, and alarm conditions. In addition, the user can monitor electronic valve operations, antisweat heaters, and fan status, and check evaporator coils for frost. New control strategies also enable users to manage loads independently. Traditional control systems cycle loads on and off. With Degree Master technology, lights, fans, and antisweat heaters can be turned on or off for designated cases, instead of all cases. The Degree Master design enables users to add features by adding modules. The base unit includes relays for fans, lights, and basic refrigeration solenoids. The local case display shows operating parameters such as case temperature, set points, and status. Installation and wiring requirements of the systems are greatly reduced compared to traditional systems. Using single point power distribution reduces electrical and control wiring and because it is software driven, fewer monitoring and control com ponents are required. The case wiring only requires two wires to be run to the case for communication, thus eliminating multiple wire runs from the back of the store to the case. Danfoss provides Platinum, Gold, and Bronze members with discounts and other benets. The company partners with its lead distributors to provide training and customer support. Were trying to direct our resources towards our best partners, says Dave Andersen, who oversees the program. The more they can increase their knowledge base and sales, the better we can help them with support and pricing. To get to the Platinum level, they need to reach the highest level of sales and also employ a drives spe cialist, whom we help to train. The program started in 2001 and since then NAMC has been success ful at moving motivated Gold level distributors up to the Platinum level. Distributor sales at dedicated partners have increase signicantly and high level distributors have been able to boost their competitiveness with lower prices. Danfoss North American Motion Controls has launched a distributor partnership pro gram that focuses not only on price incentives, but also on strengthening application and service knowledge. In addition, we changed the threeway valves to twoway valves and now we can control the pumps using differential pressure cells at extreme ends of the loop. The facility also incorporated three PID controllers to regulate the pumps and maintain minimum pressure. With this new system, they have adequate ow to satisfy the needs coming from the end of the loop. Now we only pump what is being called for in the way of cooling throughout the facilitys 1. 4 million square feet. The installation of the drives is a retrot and replaces an old inlet guidevane system that was no longer functional. They no longer have to manually adjust the controls. The HVAC system in the building uses four supplyandreturn air handlers with two fans per handler in some instances. Along with the AFDs we upgraded to high efciency motors and removed the old nonworking inlet guidevanes, says Stchur. The air handlers are controlled through a building management system that monitors static pressure, discharge and return air temperatures, including humidity. Sensors for the system are located in the ductwork. One sensor is high in the building on the 10th oor with an additional sensor Project Specs Energy efciency, safety and environmental comfort for patients and staff were Harper Hospitals goals when they began a project to upgrade their HVAC and chill water systems. AIRCONDITIONING REFRIGERATION low environmental impact, being free of chemicals that release chlorine into the atmosphere. To heat and cool the building and supply required ventilation, a highefciency dual pathway system was selected, with intelligent ventilation that delivers only the required volume of outside air and because of the heatefcient design of the building envelope, only a single air handler is needed. Inside the store, energyconserving strategies continue. A daylight distribu tion system spreads even illumination from skylights over produce and check stand sections of the store as the sun rises over the store, and is able to supply more light, electric illumination in those areas is correspondingly dimmed. There is no change in lighting level inside the store. Skylight panels are insulated to reduce heat gain during the summer months. When electric illumination is used, it comes from high efciency uorescent lamps with electronic ballasts. Refrigerated cases use lowenergy doors with antisweat heaters that consume onethird less power. The key components Danfoss provided in the LESS project were AKC55 controllers for the refrigeration, and airconditioning, over 140 AKC 164 Smart Case Controllers, and Power Focus software for modeling and analysis of energy usage in all the stores energyconsuming systems. Danfoss also supplied highly reliable electronic valves and other refrigeration components. Almost all the Danfoss components were installed at the machinery and case factories, making them integral parts of the equipment. In selecting components for the actual store building, each parts effect on the environment was considered. Ceiling tiles made from recycled glass were found to be more durable and stain resistant and to have better thermal properties the insulation has at least 25 percent recycled content in an area where cedar siding is the norm, the LESS store uses siding made from cementlike material, which looks exactly like cedar. Inside the store, particle board is replaced by straw board, an agricultural byproduct, and formaldehydebased glue is eliminated. These are only a few of the measures taken to minimize environmental impact. Now that the LESS store is operating, it is projected to avoid consumption of as much as 374 tons of coal and 650 barrels of oil annually. Also avoided will be the emission of up to 987 tons of CO2. Ahold will save thousands of dollars each year for the life of the store. Most importantly, the savings value of each component will be identied, and the lessons learned in this single store can be applied to future stores, multi plying the effects of energy saving and environmental conservation many times over. Figure 1A Danfoss Power Focus Software model shows actual power usage at a typical Stop Shop store. Figure 2Implementing the concepts developed by the LESS project team yielded 30 percent savings in actual power consumption. The main objective is to build a Superstore that uses 30 percent less energy than the current prototype store. Real World Solutions A new store to be built in Foxboro, Massachusetts was selected to test the advanced energy saving concepts developed at the Rocky Mountain confer ence. Danfosswas called upon for expertise in controls and in software to evaluate energy usage and savings. Other major manu facturers and supermarket suppliers were chosen to supply compressor racks, cases, lighting xtures, and heat, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment. All brought key engineers to the conference. BECAUSE ENERGY IS SUCH A LARGE COST in supermarketoperation, supermarket operators have focused, in the last twenty years, on improving their protability by reducing energy consumption. One major worldwide supermarket company, Ahold USA, has now made the focus on energy more critical by taking a leading role in researching and understanding the nature of energy use in their stores and by seekin
<a10:updated>2007-07-09T17:11:50+02:00</a10:updated>

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Page 10

16Spring 2002 Danfoss Dependable. entrancegrounding plates to meet NEC trade size conduit or metric wire plug installation requirements. But to enhance efciency and effectively reduce the demand on compressors, liquid must be delivered from a subcooler without erratic uctu ations in temperature. A new electronic controller from Danfoss, used in con junction with the companys electronic expansion valve and a plate heat ex changer, can deliver liquid at a temper ature or deltat selected by the user. Designated type AKC 165, the new controller has unique control algorithms embedded. Control parameters are congured by the user, who simply selects a superheat for the subcooler and either a deltat or a specic temper ature for the subcooled refrigerant. In the Danfoss system, typically, a mediumtemperature rack system feeds the evaporator in a plate heat exchanger that subcools the liquid of a low temperature rack. Extensive testing has shown that substantial reduction in runtime for low tempera ture compressors is possible, with a dramatic reduction in energy usage by the low temperature rack. A system with the Danfoss controller can also be congured with a single rack of screw compressors. In such a system the subcooler circuit suction is returned to the midstage economizer ports of the screw rack. These compressors were designed to assist refrigerator and freezer manufac turers in meeting the new DOE energy conservation standard, said John Galyen, business development manager for Danfoss compressors. Designated type NTX, the new com pressors are produced at the Danfoss compressor plant at Monterrey, Mexico. The ve new NTX models are 115V 60 Hz versions for R134a. All are UL ap proved. Capacity range is from 600 to 1000 Btuh, and EERs range from 5. 52 to 5. 75. Danfoss has been a major supplier of compressors for domestic refrigeration in Europe for many years, said Galyen. Five years ago, we demonstrated our commitment to the North American market by establishing a new compres sorfactory in Mexico. Now customers can benet from our local production of the NTX, which offers higher ef ciency, low noise, and reliability, and it helps our appliance OEMs meet the new DOE requirements for energy conservation, with compressors from an independent supplier. At our Monterrey plant, Danfoss can react quickly to orders of any size because of our exible and automated procedures, Galyen said. Having the factory at Monterrey means easy delivery to any North American cus tomer, and adds value throughout the supply chain by reducing requirements for inventory and associated carrying costs.
