Due to advances in technology and product development, there is an increasing demand for highly qualied technicians, application engineers and service people in HVACR and process automation. As colleges, technical schools, and training providers try to tackle the shortage of skilled professionals, manufacturers and suppliers are also ramping up education programs to close the technical skills gap. In the refrigeration sector, factors such as new refrigerants, application inno vations, energy efciency technology, and environmental regulations require technical professionals to constantly update their skills. For many people the opportunity to earn while they learn makes a career in this eld very attractive, said Ed Dooley, vice president for communication and education for the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute ARI, which promotes excellence in refrigeration. As qualications increase and refrigeration technicians gain more knowledge, their jobs gain recognition. It is a rewarding career in which workers who like to be problem solvers can help improve the quality of life, notes Dooley. You see their impact everywhere from clean rooms for making computer chips and medicines to providing comfort cooling in homes and ofces while protecting them from potentially deadly weather extremes. Supplier training helps technicians gain expertise in specic equipment and appli cations. Manufacturers like Danfoss offer training programs offsite and onsite to increase knowledge in HVACR. EDUCATING MAKES BUSINESS SENSE In the various elds of process automation there is also a huge demand for quali ed, educated people to install equipment and to operate and maintain systems. Technological advances have infused every aspect of manufacturingfrom design and production to inventory management, delivery and service, states a report by the National Association of Manufacturers NAM. In industrial motion control, demands for increased productivity, tighter process control and energy savings spur constant technological changes. This is why people working with motion control systems continue their education throughout their career. The advent of the system approach to industrial automation, for example, has revolutionized motor control. The singleunit mentality has given way to applications that involve complex coordinated systems with multiple sensors, computers, controls and motors on a serial communication network. People who design and work with these systems need to understand electronics and mechanics and the newest techniques in overall process control. Motion control installations in indus trial, HVAC and water treatment require not only operational under standing of motordriven equipment, but also expertise in peripheral equip ment, such as load cells, ultrasonic sensors, photoelectric devices, PLCs, nutrient sensors, and oxygen meters. It is essential to understand how all these elements work together for system efciency and precision control. To offer training to people who work with motion control in HVAC and automation, Danfoss established the Motion Control University see page 6, which com bines classroom and online training. KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETITIVENESS Increasing the knowledge of people who work with your products is a competitive advantage. Manufacturer training programs strengthen product performance and service by putting highly skilled problem solvers in the eld. Danfoss training programs extend from staff education to seminars and workshops for sales people, con tractors, installers, engineers, and technicians. Training onsite, such as at OEM sites, contractor companies and in wholesaler stores, helps bring knowledge about refrigeration, air conditioning, heating and process automation closer to markets. Industry experts say developments in HVACR and automation will continue to increase skills requirements for technical professionals. This, in turn, continues to escalate the demand for effective training programs. by Ramping Up Training Tech Skills Shortage Limits Business ARI reports a growing shortage of the skilled workers needed to install and service air conditioning and heating equipment. Because each year the industry needs thousands of new technicians just to ll vacancies, many contractors say they have to limit their work because they are unable to nd enough workers. Training for a New Generation Within the next 15 to 20 years the babyboom genera tion of skilled workers will be retired, according to a study by the National Asso ciation of Manufacturers and Deloitte Touche Keeping America Competitive. There is a projected need for 10 million new skilled workers by 2020. Danfoss Dependable. T he HVACR industry needs about 22, 000 new techni cians each year. Nearly half of these earn degrees from public or private trade schools. But the indus try includes highly specialized sectors which need new technicians joining a manufacturer or a service organization to receive indepth training on the job that runs several years. In trade school programs, students aspiring to be HVACR technicians study thermodynamic theory and its practical application in specic elds. An important part of that education is learning how to use the numerous tools and instruments of the trade. They also learn how to identify prob lems and basic troubleshooting skills. Yet during the formal education phase, students typically learn the school solutions to common problems. They are normally taught troubleshoot ing techniques in clean, orderly shop conditions that are very different from those in the real world. Equipment is accessible and located in welllit areas. The classroom setting doesnt give the student practice in changing a commercial compressor in the dark and grime of a compressor room, or servicing a condenser on the roof of a building in wintertime. After graduating, technicians encoun ter the real world of HVACR, which poses myriad conditions and applica tion situations. In the course of their careers, they are likely to work with REFRIGERANT HANDLERS NEED CERTIFICATION The United States Environmental Protection Agency EPA has required that all persons handling refrigerants should be certied. If you are not certied you cant legally buy refrigerants. EPA Approved Section 608 certication is needed to service building air conditioning and refrig eration systems. With 608 certication, you can purchase any refrigerant in containers greater than 20 pounds. many types of systems, from scientic cryogenic equipment, domestic and residential heating and cooling instal lations to commercial installations, like those in food stores and restaurants, and industrial applications. Each customer poses different challenges that often need creative solutions. Earning while learning Manufacturers and service organiza tions depend heavily on onthejob training to develop specialized skills. Manufacturers constantly train employees to improve job skills, knowledge and efciency. Service contractors conduct training seminars, and arrange for factory representatives to conduct formal training sessions on a regular basis for their employees. Senior technicians also make presenta tions at these seminars, held during or after regular working hours. Many companies also support or at least encourage membership in trade organizations. Two of the most important are Refrigeration Service Engineers Society RSES and Refrigeration Engineers and Technicians Association RETA. RSES is a nonprot trade organization that has been a leader in training and certication for over 70 years. With more than 19, 000 members, RSES has 428 chapters in the U. S. and Canada, with afliate organizations worldwide. RETA is the only organization in the country dedicated to the professional development of refrigeration techni cians. RETA maintains local chapters The internet offers easy access to equipment and components from manufacturers websites. S. and has a mem bership of over 2, 300 individuals and companies. Tech skills put to the test In many states HVACR licensing is formalized. In Maryland, for instance, HVACR technicians, including trade school graduates, begin as apprentices and work with higher level technicians for at least two years. Next they enter the journeyman stage in which they take on more responsibilities, but their work is still checked and veried by a master in the eld. After a minimum of three years as a journeyman, the technician takes a rigorous examina tion that lasts three to vehours and covers all aspects of theory, compo nents, repair situations, and the sizing of components and systems. The test also includes contents of standard service publications such as Manual J, published by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America ACCA. Certication helps assure that techni cians have high skill levels. Certied technicians become a valuable asset by helping employers cut operating costs through reduced callbacks and increased business volume, says Mark Lowery, Director of Operations for RSES. RSES training courses reinforce expe rience in the eld. The organization has an extensive selection of training materials and courses covering every level and aspect of refrigeration and airconditioning, heating, controls, electricity, indoor air quality, and heat pumps. Each course covers deep knowledge of systems studied and has a recommended number of hours for completion. RSES also offers reference materials and computerbased training products. The organization provides direct, handson training to members in addi tion to monthly chapter meetings with guest lectures. RSES provides EPA Section 608 and North American Technician Excellence NATE certication in addition to the opportunity for advancement through the RSES Technical Institutes six levels of technician competency and the ultimate achievement of Certicate Member CM or Certicate Member Specialist CMS status. Knowledge sharing on the Net The Internet also offers helpful learning tools. Its easy to access equipment and components from manufacturers websites, which also offer troubleshooting and other information. Trade chat rooms and information sharing forums and bulletin boards allow technicians to share knowledge and experience with each other. Combined with standard reference material, communicating with peers is invaluable. Classroom training remains essential to the refrigeration education pro cess but online technology is making training easier and more convenient. Through online training and self instructed CDs and DVDs, technical professionals can t learning time into their busy schedules. Hydronic heating has high saturation in the European market, but is only beginning to catch on in North America. Installation of hydronic heating increased by 10 in 2003, and most analysts predict similar growth this year as people become aware of its bene ts. In the midst of this growth, Danfoss Heating Division, based in Ontario, Canada, is leading an effort to develop radiant heat technology, including Zone Control Panels ZCP. Because of the low awareness in the North American market about hydronic heating in general, and speci cally ZCP technology, educating customers is critical to growing business. The role of the ZCP sales engineer is very much a consultative one, says Mark Evans, North American Training Manager. There are many decision makers in considering system options and they need to understand all the features, bene ts and variations. FROM A MAZE TO A ZCP Modern hydronic heating systems are a maze of controls and piping. Jobs which involve onsite engineering and fabrication result in extended installation time and often additional, unexpected costs. Control wiring and testing often require the services of additional trades and are a prime reason for callbacks. By the time the whole system has been fabricated and wired, a lot of valuable wall space has been consumed. The prefabricated, preengineered, prewired ZCPs save signi cant time and money in the installation and lower energy consumption. The panels are used in applications such as oor warming, addon radiant heating, residential heating, commercial heating, snowice melt, multitemperature systems and hybrid systems. They are easy to install and allow for exibility in designing the system. With the prefabricated panels, a heating system can be designed more easily to meet the needs of the architect, builder, plumb ing and heating contractors, and the end users requirements. Heating within specic zones of the building or home can be easily controlled, and a level of comfort far superior to the forced air systems can be achieved. To meet the demand for knowledge about radiant heat, Danfoss established a dedicated training area at its ZCP facility in Calgary, Canada. Largely, the area is used to train trade professionals, con tractors and sales people who require a detailed understanding of the technology so that they can educate heating system decisionmakers. The facility accommo dates up to 40 participants. In addition to the modern training facility, complete with a fully functional mechanical room, trainees can overlook the ISO certied production area where Danfoss ZCPs are fabricated. TRAINING THAT FITS Seminars are geared toward people who sell and specify radiant heating products. They encompass applications, installations and specic market train ing programs to increase their expertise. Seminars can range from short sessions to fullday or multiday sessions that get into detail about all facets of the program. Danfoss ZCP presentations are also provided on CDs for distribution and use. There are several decisionmakers in radiant heating installation from the architect, builder, and mechanical engi neer, to the plumbing and heating con tractors. As well there are wide variations in market maturity across North America in the hydronic heating eld, and speci cally the radiant heating segment. It is therefore difcult to format onesizets all seminars and support materials. The seminars and CDROM tools developed by Danfoss are designed to cover a wide range of applications, installations, and specic needs of the different decision makers in heating installation. Danfoss is committed to comprehensive training in radiant heat and to elevating the expertise of the people who are in the eld, bringing the technology to the market. Danfoss Dependable. W hy should a plumbing contractor worry that even small amounts of lead in the bloodstream can cause brain damage in children Because, explains Matt Mc Croskey, a principle of manufacturers rep Mc Crosco Inc. , the valves that a contractor species could prevent lead from leaching into public drinking water. Mc Croskey, who is an agent for Danfoss Flomatic and Industrial Controls, delivers the message about lead throughout his territory in the Pacic Northwest. Education about leadfree backow preventers is a top priority for us, he says. I present at every request I get. He targets groups like The American Society of Plumbing Engineers ASPE, the San Diego United States Naval Base and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Recently he and Steve Mercer of Dawson Company, delivered a presentation at the Plumbing, Heating, Cooling Contractors PHCC Show, in Pomona, California, where there was a lot of interest in the issue of waterborne lead. The seminar included handson demonstrations with cutaways to demonstrate the ease of design and maintenancerepair for backow preventers and valves. Using leadfree backow preventers and other valve products reduces the lead levels in the water supply. When the ow of water is reversed from the water supply system back into the potable system, it creates a backow condition reverse of water ow. Backow preventers prevent contaminants from owing back into the potable water system. The amount of lead in plumbing supplies is related to how it is fabricated. GO LEADFREEITS THE LAW Not only is it ethical to specify leadfree valves, but it is also the law. The Environmental Protection Agency EPAs Safe Drinking Water Act has expanded the lead free denition to include leaching standards that are now contained in American National Standards Institute NSF International ANSINSF Standard 61. California has taken a leading position in water supply safety by enacting Proposition 65 to protect the states drinking water sources from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm and to inform citizens about exposures to chemicals in the water. Prop 65 states that lead leaching in drinking water be less than 5 parts per billion PPB. Flomatic water system valves are sold in California with NSF certication that assures the valve has normalized concentration under static conditions of ve or fewer parts per billion of lead, explains Mc Croskey. He says despite regulations, many suppliers and contractors continue to go on with business as usual. A private group called As You Sow AYS led suit against more than 40 manufacturers and distributors of products that contain lead or lead compounds to prompt changes. Danfoss Flomatic is the rst manufacturer to offer the California market valves that meet stringent lead leaching tests based on the NSF Standard. Water Industry Gets the A little lead is a big problem. Findings published in The New England Journal of Medicine strongly suggest not only is any amount of lead harmful to a childs brain, but also that greater damage seems to occur at levels below 10 micrograms than above that. The study indicates there is no threshold for leads effects on the brain and just small amounts seem to have relatively large effects. In addition to drinking water, common sources of lead exposure include paint chips, hobby materials, and home health remedies. Lack of awareness of the importance of training is a costly problem, says George Lanthier, president of Firedragon Consulting. This is a very traditional business and people continue to learn how to do things the oldschool way, says Lanthier. Lanthier, whose company delivers train ing and consulting services to oil and gas heating industries, says too often tech nicians are taught old methods in the eld for diagnosing and repairing fuel systems. He says not only is there a lack of knowledge about the science of heat ing and about products like fuel pumps, but there is also insufcient training in areas like energy efciency and pollution reduction. The shortage of welltrained oil heat ing technicians plagues states across the country, according to a National Oil Heat Research Alliance NORA survey. Sixtythree percent of oil heating retail ers surveyed had difculty nding quali ed technicians and 54 percent said they had difculty nding people they could train to become qualied. Technical schools, trade associations, and training rms help to improve skills in residential heating. But manufactur ers, including Danfoss, play a major role in training with seminars and workshops about specic products. You really need to train technicians on the specic products you sell, says Gene Handke, service manager for Taylor Oil, which employs 84 people and has a customer base of 12, 000. Handke requires his staff to attend about eight manufacturer training sessions per year. Whats good about companydelivered training is that it comes to you the technicians dont have to take the time away from the workplace. Handke says supplier training familiar izes the technicians with specic prod ucts and, in turn, reduces callbacks, which is a major objective of residential fuel companies. Danfoss service techni cian training familiarizes participants with construction, operation, application and limitations of residential fuel units for all brands of units, including its own. The program is approved for 2. 0 credits toward NORA Certication. No matter how much experience a person has, he or she can always benet from these courses, says Handke. Even after forty years in the business I still learn new things every time, he adds. Heating systems are getting more technical. For example, now you must use instrumentation for measuring, you cant just see the re with your eyes. A Good Technician is Hard to Find NORA reports that in addition to basic training for tasks like wiring and solder ing, technicians need better knowledge in areas like electrical and combustion. There is also a need to improve knowl edge in support areas, such as management, sales, marketing, and customer rela tions. The alliance has developed a cooperative effort across the industry to standardize technical training and to educate managers about investing in educa tion. Technicians acquire a mini mum number of credits through seminars to become certied. NORAs accreditation system works well for residential fuel companies like Taylor, which is located far from any training facilities. Technicians accumulate credits for the supplier seminars held at the workplace. The program, he says, helps to organize and standardize training, though there are still too many people who install, repair and service heating systems, but dont have adequate skills. Industry professionals like Lanthier and Handke agree that there will have to be a major cooperative effort on the part of manufacturers, fuel oil heating providers, and associations like NORA to meet this challenge. Manufacturers Fuel Residential Heating Knowledge Proper installation and service mean fewer call backs, greater efciency, and reduced wear in residential oil heating. Yet training remains undervalued throughout the industry. Dearth of skills threatens economy The U. Training in motion controls just isnt what it used to be it is more ex ible, more accessible, and covers a wider range of topics than ever before. Take a look at the new face of motion controls learning A group of industrial designers and installers gathers in a training facility in Illinois to attend an advanced course on motion controls, covering topics as synchronizing, posi tioning, serial communication, and precision motor control, with computer simulations and live demos. That same day in Tennessee an instructor delivers a workshop to employees in a factory that is installing the latest generation of variable frequency drives. In Singapore, also that day, a salesman completes an online tutorial about basic motion control theory. These trainees are spread around the globe, but all of them are learning through the same training center the Danfoss Drives Motion Control University MCU. In motion controls, it is critical to business that technical professionals know how to solve complex applications. Courses are available for people working at all levels in motion controls, such as design engineers, service contractors, maintenance engineers, and salespeople. The training center provides training for motion control devices such as variable frequency drives, soft starters and motors in relation to industrial, HVAC and water industries. PRODUCT NEWS Danfoss Introduces Universal Replacement Scroll Compressor The Danfoss Commercial Compressor division complements its Maneurop reciprocating replacement compressor with a dropin service replacement Performer Scroll Compressor designed for commercial refrigeration and airconditioning applications. With four compressor models available, the new universal replacement scroll compressor ranges in capacity from 9 to 15 Tons R22 and can be used to make tandems, trios and quadros extending up to 60 Tons R22. In response to customer demands, Danfoss developed an upper mounting bracket for tandem units and includes detailed technical instructions for replacing the compressor. A userfriendly mounting tempate is also included which allows the universal replacement scroll to be mounted as a service replacement for any other brand of scroll compressor. The competitively priced compressor is more efcient, quieter, and more reliable than other scroll compressors because of its innovative design. The precisely controlled orbit insures radial sealing without scroll ank contact. The path of the orbiting scroll is held constant with respect to the xed scroll, and only a thin lm of oil is required to maintain radial sealing. The unique oating tip seal design provides superior axial sealing, and allows for differential expansion of the scroll members again, sealing is achieved without scroll to scroll contact. The result is high efciency with no wearin time required, along with low vibration, low noise, and extended service life. The universal scroll compressors are available with brazed connections. These UL recognized and CE certied compres sors are produced at the companys Lawrenceville, Georgia facility to ensure timely delivery for the U. S. market. For more information call 410 9318250. No manual valve adjustment is required. Danfoss has designated the new product type ORV. Operation of the ORV is governed by an internal thermostatic element. As oil circulates through the screw compressor, it gains heat. Part of the hot oil leaving the compressor enters one intake port of the ORV regulating valve, and the remainder passes through a heat exchanger to the other intake port. The valves thermostatic element modulates mixing of hot and cooled oil to maintain the oil temperature at the valves outlet within 10F 5. 6C of the nominal temperature. Standard temperature setting is 120F 49C, with other temperature settings available from Danfoss. ORV valves have extended buttweld ANSI, DIN or socketweld cylindrical connections for ease of installation and service. The top cover is removable without disturbing piping. A wide range of sizes is available buttweld with 1, 112, 2, 212, and 3 and socket weld with 1, 112, and 2 connections. Maximum working pressure is 580 psig 40 bar. The valves have optimized ow characteristics and a stainless steel nickelplated thermostatic element. ORV valves have high resistance to vibration and shock, and can be mounted in any position.
