To secure sustainability in all our product development and manufacture, the three pillars on which we base our aim to build a better world are: • energy savings • environmental responsibility • social responsibility The world’s first mass produced electronic motor control Danfoss Drives is a leading global provider of electronic motor controls, with an ever increasing market share. Danfoss introduced the world’s first mass produced variable speed drive for AC motors in 1968, known as VLT®. Customer-driven development Customers within HVAC, food & beverage, water and waste water, chemistry, textile, materials handling and more have been the driving force behind development of the VLT® drives. The company’s headquarters are in Gråsten, Denmark, and production takes place in Denmark, the USA and China. Danfoss Drives is represented in more than 100 countries and employs over 2,600 people. Electronic motor control via the power supply By monitoring and controlling frequency, voltage and power supply to AC motors, VLT® drives fully control motor-driven applications including, for example, speed, flow, torque, pressure and position. This removes the need for costly and complicated mechanical control devices, saving considerable amounts of energy. The Danfoss Environmental Policy In signing the ICC Business Charter for Sustainable Development, Danfoss has undertaken an obligation to: • Support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges • Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility • Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally-friendly technologies Our commitment to seek continuous improvements in environmental areas is laid out in our own environmental policy. This commits us to: • Promote sustainable development by preventing pollution and eliminating undesirable impacts on the environment • Ensure our efforts result in continuous and measurable improvements in the environment • Ensure that Danfoss activities are planned and carried out to take account of individual employees, their work environment and surroundings • Ensure all Danfoss production units comply with the ISO 14001 standard, local environmental and work environment legislation 3
<a10:updated>2010-07-19T11:28:56+02:00</a10:updated>

Danfoss Drives Page 4

Energy saving products VLT® products and solutions contribute to environmental protection by reducing energy consumption and optimising the use of resources across the company’s market areas. For more than 30 years, reliable and efficient automation systems from Danfoss Drives have increased companies’ productivity, saved energy and improved comfort levels. The variable speed drives sector has a huge role to play in energy conservation, providing true variable control of fans and pumps. Wherever a centrifugal fan or pump is being run damped or throttled, energy is wasted across the regulating device, creating heat or noise. In HVAC applications, energy savings of approximately 48% can be achieved. One power plant saved every year The present production of VLT® drives over a year, when installed, will save as much energy as is generated by an average power plant. For fosil fueled power plants, an equivalent amount of carbon oxide is saved and the power distribution net released equivalently. At the same time, better process controls improve product quality and reduce waste and wear on equipment. Unique energy saving features Automatic Energy Optimisation (AEO) constantly adjusts motor voltage to match changing speed and load conditions; a feature that, in itself, cuts energy consumption by 5-10%. An exclusive Digital Voltage Vector Control provides near perfect output current sine wave and full rated motor voltage at rated frequency, further boosting efficiency in both drive and motor. A Sleep Mode Function detects pumps or fans that are running unnecessarily and then turns them off : a simple way to save even more energy. Additional benefits of frequency converters • Simplified mechanical installation leads to ease of commissioning, easier system balancing and reduced maintenance • The ideal soft-start characteristics of frequency converters lead to reduced maximum demand, less physical system stress and increased equipment life • Reduced fan speed leads to vastly reduced fan noise and improved comfort levels • Improved production rates, reduced material costs and improved product quality can be achieved through better system control • Hidden installation costs are removed with the elimination of star/delta starters and power factor correction capacitors, and the use of lighter power cables • Danfoss Drives monitor their own energy levels, eliminating the costs of extraneous energy monitoring equipment 4
<a10:updated>2010-07-19T11:28:56+02:00</a10:updated>

Danfoss Drives Page 5

<a10:updated>2010-07-19T11:28:56+02:00</a10:updated>

Danfoss Drives Page 6

48% energy savings in HVAC applications The speed of AC electric motors is determined by the frequency of the AC power supply. In air conditioning and ventilation applications, motors must be dimensioned to meet maximum requirements for flow, despite the fact that this capacity is only rarely required. Traditionally, on-off operation and dampers are used to adjust the flow. Since energy consumption increases at a third the power of the fan speed, major energy savings are achieved by reducing fan speed. On average, 48% of energy is saved using VLT® operation in HVAC applications. Fan applications Fans share an equal propensity with pumps for being over-specified, and very large fans should be viewed as an opportunity to save energy and money. The fan curves show graphically the difference between operating a fan system with a discharge damper and with variable speed control. Typical fan curves showing throttling and variable speed alternatives. Reducing the speed of a fan or pump by 25% will roughly reduce its output volume by the same 25%. However, this will reduce system pressure by some 40% and reduce the power absorbed by over 50%, at the same time lowering the noise level to almost nothing. Customer energy savings Radisson SAS hotel achieved 70% energy savings By fitting Danfoss VLT® 6000 drives to their air handling units and chiller pumps, the 4star deluxe Radisson SAS Hotel Manchester Airport has taken a major step towards a target 5% reduction in energy usage yearon-year. Now linked to the Building Energy Management System, the 11kW and 7.5kW drives are now under automated control and energy costs have dropped by almost £4,000 per system: a 70% saving, paying back the initial investment in only 10 months. The 37 kW chiller pumps too are now recording savings of 45%, with payback achieved in under 18 months. Linpac saves £1,000 per month by replacing dampers Linpac Automotive of Scunthorpe manufacture moulded automotive parts. Their paint spray booths employ inlet and outlet fans with filtration and scrubbing to ensure the quality of the paint finish and uncontaminated exhaust air. Constantly changing ambient conditions in the spray booths demanded frequent manual resetting of the dampers on top of the spray booths, a time-consuming and potentially hazardous process. Linpac fitted Danfoss VLT® 6000 series drives to both inlet and outlet fans, and achieved a number of benefits. Energy consumption was reduced by over £ 1,000 per month, production benefits in terms of time and product quality were achieved, and a potentially hazardous procedure has been eliminated. VLT® Drives pay back in nine months on boiler fans Following the installation of a VLT® frequency converter on an 11 kW boiler forced draft fan, Dairy Crest has achieved energy savings of over 47,000 kWh per annum, worth over £1,800. They have achieved a payback on the investment in just nine months. Equally important, a reduction in CO₂ of 20,294 kg was achieved. By minimising the consumption of energy and raw materials and by utilising all resources effectively, pollution is reduced and negative environmental impacts eliminated. Promoting environmental awareness in our suppliers Suppliers are expected to share the company’s attitude, and their willingness and ability to act with Danfoss Drives to create environmental improvements are constantly evaluated. The global purchasing organisation select and approve suppliers taking quality, logistics, production, technology, management, employees and environment, as well as the ten principles of the UN Global Compact into consideration. To register and compare the performance of our suppliers, we apply a standardised evaluation scoring system, which includes ethical guidelines (Code of Conduct) and a list of substances and materials that must never be used in products or processes, and substances of which the use must be as limited as possible. Production All production sites operate ISO 14001 certified environmental management systems (EMS). We prefer ISO 14001 certified suppliers and currently evaluate suppliers EMS status. To asses the production’s impact on the environment Danfoss deal with the use of energy, chemicals, emissions levels, machine safety, waste management and ergonomics and employees at all factories are educated and trained to continuously improve safety and environmental impacts. All activities of the Danfoss Group are planned and implemented with regard to a safe and sound working environment. Packaging Danfoss co-operates with materials suppliers to develop recyclable packaging, and continuously seeks to reduce the amount and weight of packaging materials used. Reduced packaging consumption Danfoss Silicon Power in Germany, which supplies Danfoss Drives’ power electronics, has reduced the amount of packaging materials for finished goods by more than 50%. New packaging can be returned to the factory for re-use. Customers benefit from lower waste levels, and packaging consume dramatically less material. Fewer raw materials and less weight means environmentally-friendly products Danfoss Drives has reduced the weight of the largest frequency converters by 60% and their size by 38%, which in turn lessens the use of packaging and energy needed for the transportation of raw materials and finished goods. End-of-life practices At every stage of the product life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials to the end-ofuse phase, Danfoss is actively looking for ways to reuse and recycle materials as well as to dispose of waste safely. All products are designed for WEEE The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive delegates responsibility to producers and importers to set up a system for the treatment, such as recycling, reuse and financing of WEEE. Danfoss Drives considerately provides disposal procedures for its products, and so supports the correlation of the WEEE directive in the design phase of its products. Frequency converters are not presently required to comply with this directive. Low environmental impact of electronics All Danfoss Drives products covered by the RoHS directive are compliant with the RoHS directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). The EU directive forbids the use of lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, mercury and the flame retardants PBB and PBDE in electrical/electronic equipment. Danfoss Drives is leading the way in introducing alternatives to soldering materials with lead and has already succesfully delivered its first products which meet the requirements in the RoHS directive. 8
<a10:updated>2010-07-19T11:28:56+02:00</a10:updated>

Danfoss Drives Page 9

Materials Raw materials Production Recovery recycling Use Transport Disposal 9
<a10:updated>2010-07-19T11:28:56+02:00</a10:updated>

Danfoss Drives Page 10

Social responsibility Danfoss is aware of the role the company plays in society, and actively participates in the development of the societies in which it operates, while respecting local customs and cultures.
